Abstract "Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour" by R. S. Surtees is a masterpiece of 19th-century satirical fiction that provides a vivid and humorous critique of the English country gentry and the obsession with fox-hunting. The novel follows the adventures of Soapey Sponge, a shrewd and socially ambitious "sporting man" who maneuvers his way into the homes of the wealthy by leveraging his knowledge of horses and hounds. Surtees masterfully uses Sponge’s "tour" to expose the vanities, eccentricities, and financial insecurities of the provincial upper class. Known for its sharp wit and colorful characterizations, the work is not only a celebration of the sporting life but also a profound social commentary on class mobility and the transactional nature of Victorian social relations. This novel remains a quintessential example of the "sporting novel" genre, immortalized by its portrayal of the rogue hero. Keywords: Victorian Satire, Fox-Hunting, Class Mobility, Sporting Fiction.
